The children of the Herri Eskola in Astigarraga presented the results of the study carried out in the Zientziakide project. Within this project, certain species of fish have been sought in the Urumea and its two streams. In one of them they have not detected fish, hence they conclude that this stream can be totally free of fish.

The Zientziakide project is characterized by the participation of citizens, in this case students, together with scientists in research. Thus, they have the opportunity to know the scientific world from within, to make decisions in research and, finally, to carry out responsible research and innovations. With this intention, Elhuyar created the Zientziakide project.

In the research of the fish of the Urumea, Elhuyar has collaborated with the Maritime Station of Plentzia of the University of the Basque Country, with the invaluable collaboration of the students of the Herri Eskola of Astigarraga the sponsorship of the Basque Government, the Kutxa Foundation and the Municipality of Astigarraga.

Keep in mind that the Urumea is one of the most important rivers of Gipuzkoa and that it would be interesting to complete the catalogue of fish that inhabit there, since some species are in danger and others have been brought from outside. This would allow expanding environmental knowledge and proper management. For example, they wanted to see if the lamprey has returned to Urumea, because in Euskal Herria only has been found in Bidasoa. Largemouth bass and catfish are invasive species and they wanted to know if they have also reached the Urumea.

The fish detection technique eDNA (Environmental DNA) has been used for the first time in the Basque Country and, according to researchers, for the first time in Spain to investigate fish biodiversity. With this technique, researchers from the Maritime Station of Plentzia have analyzed the DNA that fish leave in the water. Previously, the students of the Herri Eskola of Astigarraga collected water samples in Urumea, Mundarro and Galtzaur.

Both the Herri Eskola and the House of Culture of Astigarraga will present the whole process and the results in these exhibitions:

- Herri Eskola of Astigarraga: from 11 to 21 December.

- House of Culture of Astigarraga: from January 22 to February 5.
