Elhuyar offers comprehensive multilingual language services covering multiple fields, using cutting-edge language technologies and methodologies.
We provide language services for both private companies and public organizations: for example, the creation of specialized terminology dictionaries and corpus dictionaries and a translation and proofreading service. We also offer specialized training, both general and personalized, such as language training for staff and translators of public and private institutions.
On the other hand, we also offer advice and technical support to public and private entities for the activation of the use of Basque: diagnostics, designs and assessments of the situation of the language in the organization; specific services and spaces for local reflection; sociolinguistic training; processes of linguistic empowerment; etc.
Use of Basque and planning
We offer specialized advice to public institutions in the processes of promotion and use of Basque, both at the municipal, provincial or governmental level. Once the data of the situation has been collected and the reflection with the agents involved has been carried out, we address the challenges and future plans, always adapted to each situation.
We take into account all phases of planning: observation, planning, intervention and evaluation of reality.
The Basque plan is a tool aimed at increasing the use and presence of Basque in the organization.
Since the main objective of the Basque plans is the promotion of Basque, they must adapt themselves to the culture and forms of work of the organization in order to promote the process of transformation. The Basque plan will include the challenges and objectives that the organization must achieve, as well as the actions planned to encourage the use of Basque, always taking into account the agents that make up the organization.
We take into account all phases of planning: observation, planning, intervention and evaluation of reality.
We also energize the processes of empowerment and activation of staff in order to influence the group based on the individual change of language habits.
Although the knowledge of Basque is increasing, that a speaker uses a language has to do with various factors, both internal and external, not only with their ability to use it; one of those factors is the emotional factor. We are convinced that individual attitudes are the key to changing a collective context.
To guide the reflections of the speakers and change their language habits, we organize empowerment processes and sensitization sessions based on sociolinguistic content.
Translations and language resources
We offer specialized translations: scientific-technical texts of all levels; administrative and legal texts; communication and advertising campaigns; and web and software locations. For this we have a team of highly experienced translators specialized in technical and scientific texts. We also make multilingual transcripts and subtitles.
The following certifications demonstrate the excellence of our work process:
- Certificate of quality UNE-EN 15038:2006 obtained in 2007 (AENOR, Spanish Association of Standardization and Certification).
- Quality certificate EN ISO 17100:2015 obtained in 2016 and renewed in 2019 (AENOR, Spanish Association of Standardization and Certification)
How do we work?
Formats: we will deliver the translation in the format you need.
Whether it is a simple text or a complex model, we will adapt to your needs.
Languages: We work mainly with the following languages: Basque, Spanish, French, English, Catalan and Galician; but our translation service also serves requests for all languages of the European Union. We have a wide network of native translators from both EU and foreign languages.
Deadlines: we will deliver the work within the time you need.
When you request a translation or correction, you can choose the delivery date.
Quality: we guarantee the linguistic quality of work.
Our translators only translate into your native language(s) and all translations are supervised by a corrector. We have a team of linguistic quality, of which are part, among others, three corresponding academics of Euskaltzaindia of recognized prestige, in addition to translators and terminologists of long trajectory. This team periodically updates the linguistic criteria of work, something always important to ensure the quality of the work.
Monitoring: You can control at all times the cost of work and the phase in which it is.
Through the ItzulpenFlow web app, you can control all the phases of your work, from the time you request the budget to the time you receive the translation or correction.
We are experts in language and language technologies, and share our experience with other professionals. We offer both face-to-face and online training courses:
- We organize translation seminars to train professionals who translate both Basque and Spanish.
- We provide training courses on the fundamentals of translation.
- We also have general writing and technical writing courses.
- We offer training on scientific and technical terminology.
- We teach courses on translation tools.
- And we also train professionals to indicate the correct use of machine translation: how and when to use it, what aspects should be taken into account…
Are you concerned about the quality of your organization's texts? The quality of the texts that an organization writes and sends is of vital importance to its reputation, so organizations that produce or translate many texts show their concern about this issue. In addition, it is important to preserve the internal coherence of the texts linguistic cohesion to ensure the linguistic quality. In Elhuyar we do analysis or text audits: we analyze samples and make quality measurements and, depending on the results, we offer the style recommendations that we consider necessary in each case.
In addition to the bilingual Elhuyar dictionary, we also have other terminological dictionaries that can be consulted on paper, web or mobile devices. We also have a service aimed at both public and private entities for which we produce dictionaries from the analysis of their documentation; these dictionaries can be monolingual, bilingual or multilingual.

We have been working on corpus creation for many years. We have created monolingual, bilingual and multilingual corpus; these corpus have become an essential tool to continually complete and update dictionaries.
To create the corpus we use our own technology, the result of the research work we carry out in the field of language technologies.
Here is a sample of our main corpus:
- Corpus monolingual (eu) Lexikoaren Behatokia. It is a Euskaltzaindia project, developed in collaboration with UZEI and the IXA research group of the UPV/EHU. At the end of 2020 the corpus had 77,958,327 textual forms and will continue to grow each year.
- Parallel corpus (en-es/eu) EHUskaratuak, created for the UPV/EHU. It is a multilingual corpus composed of 18,048,431 textual forms.
- Corpus of science and technology (ZTC), created by Elhuyar, in collaboration with the IXA research group of the UPV/EHU: It is a labeled corpus composed of 8.5 million textual forms.
- Multilingual parallel corpus Consumer, made for the Eroski Foundation:
Xuxen is a spelling and grammatical corrector of Basque developed by Elhuyar and the IXA research group of the UPV/EHU. Today, in addition to detecting spelling errors, Xuxen also makes grammatical proposals.
Xuxen is also compatible with the latest versions of the most commonly used digital text typing tools.
