Nine Basque organisations have met today on the occasion of the International's and Girls' Science Day to present the broad programme of activities 'Women in Science 2020' to be held from 7 to 14 February. A number of activities have been organised for all audiences (families, adolescents, adults…) in which Elhuyar will be actively involved.

The CIC nanoGUNE research center, the Materials Physics Center (CFM CSIC-UPV/EHU), the CIC biomGUNE, the Donostia International Physics Center (DIPC), Biodonostia, Tecnun-School of Engineers, Ceit, POLYMAT The initiative is supported by the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa, the Promotion of San Sebastian, Donostia Kultura, the University of the Basque Country (UPV/EHU) and the General Council of Scientific Research (CSIC).

The aim of this initiative is to make the work of women working in science visible, to break the belief that scientific-technical activities are a matter for men and to promote the choice of scientific studies between girls and adolescents.

Workshops, public talks, ginkana, visits, etc. will be held in Donostia from 7 to 14 February, according to the following timetable:

  • Friday, 7 February,
    • 16:00 h:Workshop on science at CIC nanoGUNE. Young people aged 14 and 18 will “have the opportunity to be part of a scientific and research team for a day” and to participate in a real experiment to get to know first person the world of nanoscience.
    • At 19:00 in the Club Aretoa del Teatro Victoria Eugenia, in the Scientific initiative, yesterday and today, we will have the presence of six female researchers here and today. In addition to presenting their work and presenting themselves, they will honor women pioneers in the past. And that is that, despite being pioneers in the past, many times their contribution to science was not recognized in time, and they have been forgotten over time. These are talks for all the public, which by addressing the past and present of the hand, will claim the existence and existence of women scientists so that it will never be questioned again in the future.
  • 8 February, Saturday: it will be the families' turn. The Ibaeta University Campus will host a Ginkana for families, run by Elhuyar. The teams must pass all the tests that will be hidden on the Ibaeta campus.
  • 10 February, Monday: Young people between 12 and 16 will participate in playing Engineer in Tecnun and Ceit Engineering students of the Formula Student group will teach a practical automotive workshop
  • 11 February, Tuesday: several primary and high school groups will be able to visit the schools. The researchers of the centers will perform various activities and scientific exhibitions to highlight the role of women in science throughout history. Schools may apply for visits until 27 January and shall be awarded by drawing lots.
  • February 13, Thursday:Amona´s Power will be an activity that exalts the image of adult women as transmitters of scientific culture. Guided by researchers, women over 55 will have the opportunity to know the world of research and international excellence in research centers. The science hidden in everyday life will see the light, awaken the scientist who lives inside and learn the experiments they can perform both at home and among friends.
  • 14 February, Friday, 12:00 p.m.: [Talk on equality in science: experiences and future for the scientific community]. The meeting will address equality from different perspectives of the scientific system. The round table will take place in English at the Carlos Santamaría Centre (UPV/EHU) and is open to the entire scientific community.
