On 11 June, the board of trustees of the Elhuyar Foundation unanimously appointed Jon Abril Olaetxea as General Director of the Elhuyar Foundation. April takes the witness of Leire Cancio Orueta after seven years in the direction.

Jon Abril stressed to the members of the Board of Trustees and colleagues of Elhuyar that “Elhuyar has solid values to address the current challenges of society” and stressed the “need to deepen them”. In this sense, “Elhuyar must address the challenges facing Basque society, showing its capacity for permanent response both in the field of Basque and in linguistic technologies or in the dissemination of science”. Jon Abril Olaetxea was born in Bera in 1975. He holds a degree in Communication Sciences from the University of the Basque Country. He is postgraduate in “Basque Studies and incentive to scientific culture” and in “Social Education and Sociocultural Animation”, with expert studies in “Management of linguistic diversity in business and integration policies” and “Management and Management of Cultural and Artistic Institutions”.

Since 2012 he has worked at Elhuyar as a consulting technician in Basque and participation. In the last four years she has been coordinator of the Social Participation and Innovation working group. He has worked as a journalist in various media in Basque such as Euskaldunon Egunkaria, Xorroxin Irratia or Ttipi-ttapa on television; he was a culture technician at Bera City Council; and he has also worked in politics as Deputy Mayor of Bera and Deputy Coordinator of Aralar.

It is present in numerous popular movements in the fields of Basque and culture. He is judge of the bertsolaris championships of Euskal Herria and Navarra, has published various written works and in the audiovisual has directed the documentary Neskatuak.
