Over 100 young people meet in Bilbao in the first "Bizilabe Eguna" to present 20 scientific-technological projects
- The first ‘Bizilabe Eguna’ has had the active participation of young people from Basurto, Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Zorroza who have exposed the innovative ideas worked during the course in the Ensanche Building.
- Since 2017, Bizilabe de Bilbao aims to promote scientific and technological experiences among young people of the Villa with the participation of the community.
Over 100 young people from Bizilabe in Bilbao have presented their 20 scientific and technological projects in the first edition of the ‘Bizilabe Eguna’ of the Villa. In addition to family members of the participating youth, the event held as the end of the course in the central Ensanche Bilbaíno Building has been attended by Itxaso Erroteta, Councilwoman for Youth and Sport of the City of Bilbao, and Xabier Ochandiano, Councilfor Economic Development, Trade, Tourism and Employment of the City of Bilbao, as the promoter of the project. Elhuyar's STEAM Education Coordinator, Aitziber Lasa, has also attended.
Bizilabe is a project organized by Elhuyar, which tries to offer young people scientific experiences with the involvement of the whole community. During this year 2023-2024, Basurto, Deusto, Otxarkoaga and Zorroza have had the extra-school activity Bizilabe, in which a total of 139 young people have participated divided into 11 groups; 88 young people from 5 and 6 years of Primary Education, 38 young people from 1 and 2 years of ESO and 13 young people from 3 and 4 years of ESO.
These are the 20 projects that have been presented on the day held in the atrium of the Ensanche Building as the final event of the school year in Bilbao:
Primary Education 5th and 6th projects:
-Glasses have been built to see in virtual reality. The main goal of VR glasses is to trick the brain into believing that we're seeing a 3D image.
With the programming they have programmed the “Dance dance dance revolution” and “Satorra” games. In addition, they have created a conductive model.
•Crystallizations: they have learned the crystals formation procedure, the materials needed for it and have developed supersaturated solution. They have made copper sulphate crystals, geoda eggs, glass gardens or monoamonic phosphate crystals (ADP).
• DNA extraction: they have extracted plant DNA and learned that it is the biomolecule that we share all living things.
• They have learned the principle of Pascal developing hydraulics projects. Originating the movement of fluids, they have produced the movement of the built structure. In this case, they have built doors, robotic hands and maze bridges.
• Paper aircraft engineering has become a challenge. The objective of this challenge is to design and build a paper aircraft to analyze the influence of the design and shape of the aircraft on the flight. In addition, to launch paper aircraft, they have built a paper projector based on the engineering design process.
• Have studied magnetism through experiments such as ferrofluids, magnetic slimes and electromagnets.
• They have produced a model of the solar system.
• Have studied the properties of light through different experiments.
ESO 1st - 4th Projects:
• Blind runner: they have made a stick for the blind that warns of obstacles.
• Biodiesel: they have produced biodiesel from used and unused oils and the differences between them have been analyzed to determine the best biodiesel.
• Future Street: they have manufactured a road prototype that generates electrical energy from piezoelectric material.
• Dron: they have designed and built a drone with 3D printing techniques. They've programmed it with an arduino to interact with an analog joystick. As a result, they can control flight altitude, drone inclination and movements.
• Hydrocasa: in this project they have designed and built a hydroelectric model with a pelton turbine, using 3D printing techniques.
• Antibiogram: using the antibiogram technique, natural antibiotics and antifungals present in different foods have been analyzed and compared with commercial antibiotics. This work has been awarded at the Elhuyar Zientzia Azoka.
• Hovercraft: They have built a hovercraft with different materials.
• Video game: they have created a video game with Scratch to raise children's awareness of bad eating habits.
• Hydroponic culture: they have built a hydroponic culture and sown lettuce.
• Organic cosmetics: they have produced a shower gel, a shampoo and an organic body cream.
• Distribution of pills: they have created a device to store and distribute the pills in an orderly way.
BIZILABE, a NETWORK THAT HAS GROWN SINCE 2017
Bizilabe, a project organized by Elhuyar, aims to promote scientific and technological experiences among young people, with the participation of the community, since 2017. Therefore, in addition to carrying out projects, thanks to the “Peer Meeting” initiative with professional researchers, the visits of researchers received in Bizilabe or the “Escaparates 11 February” initiative on the occasion of the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, youth has known the daily work and real references in the field of science and technology. Likewise, through visits to companies and technological centers, they have been able to know the scientific and technological reality of the environment.
Since Bizilabe de Bilbao opened its doors in Deusto in 2017, it has spread to three other areas of Bilbao: it started in 2021 in Otxarkoaga, in 2022 in Zorroza and in 2023 in Basurto. From 2017 to the present, more than 800 young people have participated in the project. In addition, the Bizilabe community has been growing and 25 companies, 43 educational centres and 234 shops have already joined.
In the course of 2024-2025, which will start in October, the new Bizilabe space of Bilbao will open in the Fronton Esperantza.
Entries are already open for participation in the Bilbao Bizilabe programme “Izan ikertzaile eta asmatzaile”, which will begin in October 2024 and end in May 2025: Bizilabe 2024-2025 inscriptions.
