Basque Research

Today is the last day of the Basque Research website. The project, created in 2002 by Elhuyar and with the collaboration of the Basque Government, has come to an end.

Over many years we have made known to society the research news of Euskal Herria. Basque research has also been disseminated internationally through several reference websites: Alphagalileo, Eurekalert, CordisWire, SINC, Innovations-report. We have published thousands of news and events in 12 years: More than 5,000 news and other events. The weekly Basque Research newsletter has 1,100 subscribers.

In this extensive and varied trajectory, in addition to the contributions of Elhuyar, are those that have helped us finance the project: Basque Government (through the SAIOTEK, HEDATU and IKT calls), Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology. Like so many others, in recent years Basque Research has tried to deal with situations of crisis as diverse as the fall of funding sources for research, such as the abandonment of the SAIOTEK call, the model of financing of the media, etc. But he has had to say goodbye to the lack of enough dams to survive.

Until recently, however, few predicted this situation. In 2012 we addressed the reflection to strengthen the Basque Research community, and since then we have been transforming and innovating the project.

One of the results of this process has been the development of the new website. We knew that the work was almost finished and that we would run out of external funding. Therefore, the new design of Basque Research will be available on the Internet without new content.

Thanks to all the informers who during these years have contributed your trust and content, to all the journalists with whom you have worked our news, to all those who have read our contents and to all the collaborators who have participated in the project, both from Elhuyar and from external companies.

From now on, the Basque Network of Science, Technology and Innovation will have another window to make known what is happening in Euskal Herria. Likewise, Basque society will have a way less to know it. However, the need to share, internationalize or socialize what network members do has not disappeared. It is therefore necessary to devise ways to do so and to put resources. Elhuyar will continue with this goal, as it is our goal and we will continue to be an active part in the invention of those paths.
