Noticia Elhuyar

Elhuyar and Agirre Lehendakaria Center will collaborate with the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa in the UPV Summer Course “Values and identity in the construction of Basque society”. It will take place on 16 and 17 July at the Miramar Palace and will bring together national and international experts to analyze the values or motivations that have driven the positive transformation of Basque society and compare them with other European and African experiences.

Cooperation, social justice, equality, sovereignty. These values are, among others, the characteristic of Basque society, the basis of projects and initiatives that have been launched in recent decades, such as the Basque university system, cooperativism or the revitalization of Basque. “Basque society has a great organizational capacity as a society, many initiatives have emerged in the same way, with horizontal structures and that, due to special socio-political circumstances, have had to look for autonomous financing channels,” said Jon Abril, a member of Elhuyar and organizer of the course.

In this course, it will be analyzed whether those values that characterize Basque society appear in other experiences such as the United Kingdom, Mozambique, Peru or India, as well as the values that should be enhanced in the future, that is, “what values should be maintained as a society in the Basque Country and what other values should be fostered in this globalized world”, added Abril.
