(Observatory on behalf of the Basque Media Observatory)

In the first six months of this year, HEKIMEN websites have had 10.2 million sessions, almost in 2011. Since 2012 there has been a continuous increase in consumption on the websites of the media in Basque, between 15% and 30% annually, with this increase expected to be around 8%.

Due to types of websites, the rise of local media websites stands out, which for the first time in September 2016 have surpassed the consumption of national websites. Taking into account the data of the first six months of this year, the general or national websites received 4,675,000 visits in that period, while the more local ones obtained more than five million. Consumption of local media accounts for half of Hekimen's media consumption. As for the duration, it is less in the premises: the recipients spend about five and a half minutes on the national websites and the average of two minutes and thirteen seconds in the premises. The thematic media have also experienced an increase in 2016, close to 31%, although its consumption does not reach 5% of the consumption of the Basque media.

Hekimen's media consumption has grown across devices, but this increase has been particularly significant in mobile, where visits have doubled between 2014 and 2015. Due to this strong mobile growth, the percentages of device consumption have varied. In 2011 almost all visits were made by computer. In 2016 almost half of the recipients reach these websites using portable devices.

Facebook and Twitter

As is known, Facebook is a great source of traffic for all the media on the network. The number of visitors arriving in the Hekimen media through this network has grown steadily in recent years:

In early 2013, Facebook reached Basque media about 100,000 visits. This absolute figure has multiplied by four in the first six months of 2016. But in relative terms, consumption is increasingly significant. A fifth of all media visits come from Facebook, more than any other social network.

According to the measurement tool Umap created by the company Codesyntax to collect and analyze the activity in Basque on Twitter, Euskaldunes are reported mainly through the media in Basque on Twitter. Or more specifically, the Basques who use Twitter mainly share media information in Basque.

Umap analyzed the activity of 14,500 Basque choleros between January and June 2016. Every month 9,000 users have passed in Basque, creating around half a million tweets per month. Just under half of the tweets in Basque, about 42%. Well, according to Umap, the most quoted sources (or domains) in Basque are in order: Berria, Argia, Eitb, Naiz, Zuzeu, Topatu, Info7 irratia, Erran, Irutxulo and Scientific Language.

When comparing this data with the number of tweets, they acquire special significance. EITB has produced four times more URLs than the Light in six months, but has not achieved the number of Light tweets. In other words, with each EITB URL you get a much lower interest than the Light. And starting with the classification of the most shared sources by the txiolaris, they are also Berria and Argia at the top of the board. A third of these 14,500 chieros, for example, have shared Berria's content.

Adding all these parameters -number of tweets (quantity), interest (quality) and diversity of users (dissemination)-, Umap has concluded that two are the clear media of reference for the Basques above the others: Berria and Argia. Local and specialized or thematic media do not reach people as much, but they have a high interest rate, higher than EITB.
