The Caf-Elhuyar awards have a clear objective: to bet on scientific culture by recognizing and rewarding the work of disseminators, researchers and creators who socialize scientific and technological issues.

The Caf-Elhuyar awards have a clear objective: to bet on scientific culture by recognizing and rewarding the work of disseminators, researchers and creators who socialize scientific and technological issues.

This recognition will take place on May 12, at the awards ceremony. Among the winners will be the mathematician María Jesús Esteban Galarza, who will receive the Elhuyar Prize for his work in the scientific dissemination and normalization of the Basque language, from the hand of the Board of the Elhuyar Foundation.

Esteban lives in Paris, a researcher at the Applied Mathematics Research Centre CEREMONIADE, and is president, among others, of the International Council of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (ICIAM).

Next to it the following categories will be awarded:

Original outreach articles. In this category, the scientific and technological works carried out in Basque are awarded. It is divided into two subcategories: general outreach articles and outreach articles based on the author's doctoral thesis. The winner of each subcategory will receive a prize of 2,000 euros and a sculpture by Imanol Andonegi Mendizabal.

Works of scientific journalism. This category awards a journalistic work created in Basque and published in 2016, with 2,000 euros and the sculpture of Andonegi.

Scholarship of creation in scientific society. This category promotes projects that work the interaction between science/technology and society. The selected project receives a scholarship of 5,000 euros in order to contribute to the development and dissemination of the project to society.

In addition, for the first time this year will be awarded the NEIKER-Tecnalia Award for the best work in the primary sector. This award has been awarded to Eva Ugarte Sagastizabal, Head of the Innovation Unit of NEIKER-Tecnalia.

The work of other categories has been analyzed by two courts. News articles and journalism work have been prepared by:

  • Leire Cancio Orueta, Managing Director of Elhuyar
  • Arturo Elosegi Irurtia, ecological researcher at the UPV
  • Marian Iriarte Ormazabal, chemist and researcher at UPV
  • Alberto Barandiaran Amillano, journalist and director of the INITIATIVE
  • Uxune Martínez Mazaga, Head of Scientific Diffusion of the Euskampus Foundation

On the other hand, the projects presented to the scholarship of creation in science society have judged:

  • Maria Gil Rodriguez, head of the scientific unit Elhuyar
  • Josu Rekalde Izagirre, Director of Art and Technology at UPV
  • Koldo Almandoz de La Cruz, film director

On the other hand, among the winners, José Mª. Pitarke de La Torre, President of the Elhuyar Foundation and General Director of CIC nanoGUNE; Arantxa Tapia Otaegi, Councillor for Economic Development and Infrastructure; and Miren Dobaran Urrutia, Deputy Councillor for Language Policy.

After the awards ceremony, Enrike Hurtado Mendieta will present the result of the project that last year received the creation scholarship in Science Society: Digital and interactive txalaparta.
