The Department of Education includes in a guide guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the learning process.
- The guide has been prepared by the Department of Education and Elhuyar, with the collaboration of Berritzegune Nagusia and Tknika. Likewise, it has been contrasted through a participatory process with 18 professors of public centers in the Basque Country and heads of experts in ICT.
The Basque Government Education Advisor, Begoña Pedrosa, and the general coordinator of Elhuyar, Jon Abril Olaetxea, today presented at the Miguel de Unamuno Secondary Education Institute in Bilbao the "Guide for the Use of Artificial Intelligences in the Educational Field". The guide is aimed at teachers of all stages and areas of education and aims to provide clear guidelines for the use of artificial intelligence in the educational setting, as well as to help reflect on artificial intelligence technologies.
In a context in which AI technologies have spread to different areas of society, the Department of Education of the Basque Government has analyzed how they should be used in the educational field. Counselor Pedrosa believes that this issue should be addressed because, as with other technologies, it is necessary to reflect on the use of these resources, analyze opportunities and risks, and make decisions about the ethical dilemmas that arise.
The guide has been prepared by the Department of Education and Elhuyar, with the collaboration of Berritzegune Nagusia and Tknika. It has been contrasted through a participatory process with 16 professors from public centers in the Basque Country and heads of ICT experts. The guide presents the educational and ethical commitments of the Department of Education and Elhuyar. It is guided by two fundamental principles: to place at the center the personal and academic development of the student, and to strengthen the cohesion of the educational community without replacing the face-to-face relationships.
These principles coincide with the commitment of the Department of Education and Elhuyar to protect the dignity and autonomy of people, ensure privacy and equal opportunities of data, and prioritize sustainability and transparency. Elhuyar's general coordinator, Jon Abril Olaetxea, has highlighted that this guide is based on international recommendations and scientific evidence, and offers the educational community a practical and strategic tool for the responsible use of digital tools.
Guide to the use of artificial intelligence in education
The guide is aimed at teachers of all stages and areas of education, to help them in their activity. The guide proposes a responsible and ethical use of artificial intelligence, rooted in solid pedagogical bases. Danel Solabarrieta, a member of the Elhuyar STEAM area, has put some models for teachers to show where they can use Artificial Intelligence.
The guide intends to respond to the current situation, taking into account the limitations of this type of technologies and the doubts and ethical dilemmas they generate. The teacher or teacher should therefore be careful if he chooses to use these technologies, since the tools available to them are not "neutral".
The topics analyzed in the guide are: how artificial intelligence works, the risks and limitations of artificial intelligence, legislations, the selection of artificial intelligence resources for teachers and advice for the use of chatbots, a computer program that follows a dialogue through both textual and auditory methods, among others. It gives examples of use for different stages and subjects, with the specific instructions used.Risks are also noted.
This paper has also analyzed how to use Artificial Intelligence to learn, the use of Euskera, the use of Artificial Intelligence in domestic tasks and education, as well as the changes that Artificial Intelligence will entail.
Now, each center will have to decide and plan how it will behave at the center level with artificial intelligence: if it is decided to use it, who will use it and for what, what training will be needed, what tools will be used, how it will be tackled.
The guide remembers that bots like ChatGPT cannot be used until age 13, and from then on it should be a planned and measured use, specifying when, how and for what the tools will be used.
As for resources, it has been taken into account that they are useful for teachers, that they are available in Europe, that they have a free choice, that they work well in Basque and that they are the most used by high school students.
Use of the Basque
The counselor recalled that currently the most widely used models available can be used well in Basque. In any case, in the data used to train AI models, the number of texts in Basque is much lower than in other languages. If we ask him about Basque culture or our reality, the answers may be incorrect or insufficient. In view of this, the counselor explained that since education “we have something to do. Using these tools in Euskera, we will contribute to the survival and daily use of our language... it is also in our hands to actively work the future of the Basque Country and digital sovereignty "has ended.
