In 2016, Elhuyar managed to equate the result, while the year 2017 was a year of consolidation, improving the trend of two years ago and obtaining a positive result last year. Elhuyar earned an income of almost 4 million and a half euros. Of these, 70% come from the sale of products and services, 17% of competitive subsidies and 13% of agreements and partners.
On 22 June, the board of trustees of the Elhuyar Foundation approved the accounts of 2017, as well as the accounts of the limited companies Elhuyar Zubize and Eleka, owned by the foundation, at the board meeting.
They are members of the Elhuyar board of trustees: Txema Pitarke (President), Eustakio Arrojeria, Jesus Ugalde, Jose Mari Rodriguez, Xanti Goñi, Josu Waliño, Imanol Telleria, Jabi Duoandikoetxea, Itziar Laka, Rafa Bañales, Arantza Diaz de departamento de Ilburu
Initiatives such as the launch of the Bizilabe youth research centre in the field of science have been a clear example of this. The first pilot project was opened in Bilbao in autumn 2017, and in turn, in the Azpeitia-Azkoitia area steps were taken to bring young people closer to research. The Bizilabe project was supported by the Bilbao City Council and the economic development agency Iraurgi Berritzen. On the other hand, in the field of language, along with other research entities, we jump to machine translation systems based on neural networks.
We have continued with the usual projects: socializing science (television program Teknopolis, radio program Norteko Ferrokarrila, web zientzia.eus and magazine Elhuyar) and offering linguistic resources to users. In addition to working continuously on the renewal, complementation and updating of the Elhuyar dictionaries website, equality criteria are being incorporated: a comprehensive analysis of discriminatory vocabulary has begun and some examples, acceptances and accesses to inclusive use have been modified. Although ours is the most visited dictionaries website, we must invent new formulas to guarantee the economic future of our website. This year we have to thank the users of the web dictionaries who have acted responsibly and generously and have joined the Foundation 100 users. Thanks to these new partners, the number of individual partners has grown by 25%.
In order for the projects developed by Elhuyar to thrive, it is essential that, in addition to the collaboration of individual partners, collaborating entities and companies are also supported. Elhuyar has the following collaborating entities: Department of Economic Development and Infrastructure of the Basque Government, Department of Education of the Basque Government, Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and City Council of Usurbil. As collaborating companies, in 2017, we had: Cooperative Maier, Tecnalia, Neiker-Tecnalia, Laboral Kutxa, Lagun Aro, Tajo Group, Eika, Irizar, Ulma and Kide.
The 2017 report lists the most significant initiatives of last year and can be consulted here.
