Leiho Morea

Elhuyar presents the website Leiho Morea

2026 | January 13

It is a tool to help understand, create and research issues related to feminism.
It includes content in Basque related to feminism, as well as a multilingual terminology dictionary.
It is the first corpus in Basque that combines written and audiovisual content.

This morning, the Leiho Morea website was launched at the Usurbil headquarters in Elhuyar. Itziar Cortés Etxabe, coordinator of the Language and Technology Unit of Elhuyar, and Margaret Bullen, director of Equality of the EHU, have spoken, and both have highlighted the importance of such a project in society. On the road to real equality and a just society, it is essential to continue to deepen feminist discourse and to make available to the whole of society the means necessary to elaborate such discourse with a solid and coherent terminological basis. Therefore, Leiho Morea serves both to look at feminism and to look at the world from feminism.

Leiho Morea is a consultation tool (https://leihomorea.eus/), which collects content in Basque related to feminism, and has two fundamental sections to understand the concepts of that field and to elaborate, translate and investigate discourses related to it: a dictionary (which allows to consult terms and their definitions) and a corpus or set of audiovisual content (to be able to consult both terms and other types of content).

The first section gives continuity to the Feminism and Equality dictionary, presented in 2020. On that occasion the basic concepts were compiled, and from now on more and more significant terms will be added, which will allow us to continue consolidating the terms in Basque and specifying the definitions of the concepts.

In the second section, Leiho Morea compiles two types of content: writings (books, press articles, academic articles, guides...) and audiovisuals (podcasts, feminist days...). The objective is to create a significant set of contents in the field of feminism and that this resource is useful for all kinds of consultations and research work related both to the language itself and to the content.

Leiho Morea is aimed at the whole of society, as anyone may need to clarify the meaning of a term in this area or know how a certain concept is being used in feminist discourse in Basque. In any case, it is especially useful for those who are usually dedicated to the creation of content related to feminism: members of the feminist movement, journalists, writers, translators and translators, podcast creators, students, university professors, research staff, equality specialists, people dedicated to politics and, on the other hand, it is also aimed at linguists, since the corpus section is a very valuable source for analyzing the evolution of the Basque language in recent years.

Sponsoring and collaborating entities

The initiative has two main sponsors. The Directorate of Equality of the EHU and the University of Deusto. On the other hand, the EIZIE association and the Basque Language Institute of the EHU have helped to define both the basis of the project and the criteria for selecting the contents.

However, at the base of this collection are the contents, and we want, therefore, to highlight the work of creators, creators and agents who have generously offered their work to Leiho Morea. On the one hand, authors, authors, translators and translators of written works, as well as creators and creators of audiovisual content. On the other hand, publishers, the media and various associations: Berria, EHU, EITB, Elkar, Emagin, Hamaika Telebista, Iñurri Elkartea, Jakin, Katakrak, Susa, Txalaparta, UEU, Argia

From now on, the work of these agents will continue to be incorporated and others will be incorporated. In addition, new concepts extracted from these contents will be added to the dictionary.
