Elhuyar will be 50 years old this year and a number of initiatives will take place throughout the year under the slogan “Elhuyar, 50 years later”. To commemorate this special anniversary, an image has been created, as well as the Elhuyar 50 box. This box will keep the testimonies, objects and comments on the various initiatives of 2022 so that citizens of the year 2072 will have a testimony on the activities carried out in our country fifty years before.

Elhuyar was born in 1972, with the aim of disseminating scientific knowledge in the Basque country. Several students of the San Sebastian School of Engineering, eager to promote the Basque in its field, began to meet every Saturday in the “San Ignacio Circle” of the order of the Jesuits, located in San Marcial Street. Its initial objective was to begin to elaborate in Basque the topics studied in Spanish in the faculty, for which they prepared various texts. Later, the group became a cultural association, and in 2002 it became a foundation.

Since then, Elhuyar has worked tirelessly, offering, in addition to science, linguistic services, artificial intelligence, language technologies and social consulting services, always promoting the Basque language, with the following objective: to contribute to building an active, critical and egalitarian society from the Basque language, making use of technology and knowledge and promoting scientific dissemination.

Currently, Elhuyar has two headquarters: the main one in Usurbil, and one in Durango. The group currently has a hundred members, and henceforth, Elhuyar will continue his trajectory with this group of professionals, bringing the Basque closer to modernity, bringing the Basque cultural world together with science and technology, using innovative systems and bringing them to industry, and joining with networks not only from the Basque Country, but also from Spain and Europe. Vanguard, commitment and quality assurance, those are the main emblems of Elhuyar.

Elhuyar, 50 years later

To celebrate its half century of life, Elhuyar will promote various initiatives throughout the year under the motto “Elhuyar, 50 years later”. Along with this motto you will use the image created for the commemoration. One element will serve as a link for all these initiatives: the Elhuyar 50 box. This box will contain the testimonies, objects and comments regarding the initiatives carried out throughout the year: scientific discoveries, social reflections, the climate crisis, the pandemic, news relating to Basque society, as well as news of an international character, works of art... Elhuyar is immersed in the design and organization of a series of commemorative events related to all its areas of work. Among them are: use of the Basque in the social and labor sphere; promotion of science among youth in the context of the tenth anniversary of the Zientzia Azoka; activities that will address the challenges of artificial intelligence; relationship between translation and technology; equality and social transformation; participation in the summer courses of the UPV and UEU; audiovisual, special radio and television programs; special issue of the journal Elyar.

The central event will take place in November and we will celebrate it with a festive show involving members, collaborators, partners, subscribers and sponsors that make up the Elhuyar community, as well as other collaborators and agents and representatives of Basque society. This act will allow us to look both 50 years ago and 50 years ahead.

Elhuyar has been a pioneer and innovative entity since its inception, and if today, after 50 years, it continues to advance, it is thanks to the vision of the future of Basque society 50 years ago. We must not forget the contribution of all the people who have been part of Elhuyar for five decades, or those who will be part of the future, because Elhuyar exists because of all of them and will continue to exist 50 years later, in fifty years' time.
