Emiliano López Atxurra, president of Petronor, and Leire Cancio Orueta, director of the Elhuyar Foundation, today signed an agreement for the creation of a multilingual dictionary of the oil industry. Thus, Petronor, as a driving force, and Elhuyar, as a technology partner, have agreed to “manage the terminology of the energy company and increase its visibility in the Basque sector”.
“Collecting and properly managing the multilingual terminology used in the oil industry” is the project’s goal, “in addition to providing a resource that supports and orients the linguistic needs of workers in the sector.”
In the presentation, the president of Petronor, Emiliano López Atxurra, has shown his adherence to Basque, and stressed that Petronor wants to “value the modernization of Basque in the field of language, energy and technology millenary”.
For her part, the director of Elhuyar, Leire Cancio, thanked the collaboration of Petronor and wanted to remember that “language is one of the aspects of excellent management, as a tool of communication and integration”.
This initiative will create the “Multilingual Dictionary of the Oil Industry” and the application of consultation on the Internet. The dictionary will cover around 300 technical definitions and 1,500 specialized concepts related to the sector, organized by departments, in four languages: Basque, Spanish, French and English.
The database will be located on the Elhuyar server, in order to facilitate future updates and maintenance tasks, and will be inserted into the Petronor website for free use.
At the same time, the idea is to be able to use the same query application to perform direct searches in other online dictionaries.
The dictionary will end in 2018 coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Petronor's constitution in 1968.
