EGA Master has compiled in a dictionary the terminology of its area, under the advice of experts in terminology from Elhuyar.

The company EGA Master, S.A., advised by experts in terminology of the Language and Technology unit of Elhuyar, has developed the Specialized Dictionary EGA Master in seven languages: Basque, Spanish, English, French, German, Portuguese and Chinese. In addition, many of these terms have specific compensation for Hispanic America.

EGA Master, a world leader in the manufacture of high quality tools used in the industrial field, has compiled in the dictionary about 2,700 concepts related to the characteristics of the products and tools of its catalog, which can be consulted on the Internet at http://egamaster.elhuyar.eus/.

The dictionary was presented this morning at the Artium Museum in Vitoria-Gasteiz. The event was attended by representatives of all the entities that participated in the project. On behalf of EGA Master, the Director General, Iñaki Garmendia, from Elhuyar, the technical director of the Garbiñe Alkiza Lopez de Samaniego dictionary, and the Deputy Minister of Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, Patxi Baztarrika, spoke.

Internationalization forces a company like EGA Master to continually create new terms in multiple languages. It is evident that the era of globalization leads us to a new business reality that forces the company to work in several languages. At EGA Master they realised that an adequate linguistic strategy is key to competitiveness, as it helps to be closer to customers.

Therefore, and under the advice of experts in terminology of the Language and Technology unit of Elhuyar, they have created this dictionary with the aim of collecting and making available to society the usual terms in their daily activity. In this way, this dictionary can be used in other sectors (translation, journalism, education…). On the other hand, this dictionary will also help to normalize Basque, since it equates Basque to other languages with a consolidated terminology in the tools sector.

Iñaki Garmendia, director of the EGA Master, explained that “the international family multinational company is the driving force behind this project, a Basque company working in twenty languages. And Basque is one of those twenty languages, no more or less.” On the other hand, he stressed that EGA Master is a Vitorian company pioneer in its sector, “since it is the first that has developed a dictionary of these characteristics”.

The Deputy Minister of Linguistic Policy of the Basque Government, Patxi Baztarrika, stressed that “it is to applaud the initiative of the EGA Masters, which has carried out this tool to promote the use of Basque without subsidies and financed entirely on its own”. “In a globalized world, internationalization is vital for companies, and the languages of globalization are necessary to position themselves in international markets, but EGA Master demonstrates that a leading international company accommodates Basque in its management.” On the other hand, Baztarrika has pointed out that this dictionary will be a perfect complement to the 49 terminological dictionaries published to date by the Vice-Ministry of Linguistic Policy, in collaboration with the Terminology Commission of the Basque Advisory Council, among which are the dictionaries Machine Tool and Numerical Control.

After Mr. Baztarrika, takes the word Garbiñe Alkiza, member of Elhuyar. He stressed that Elhuyar has provided the EGA Master dictionary with his knowledge and experience in terminology and linguistic technologies. “We have been working on the vocabulary for more than 40 years and the best-selling and most consulted dictionaries in Basque have been stamped. In the EGA Master dictionary, in addition to the work of lexicography, we had to contribute our knowledge of linguistic technologies”. Finally, report the dictionary details. Alkiza has announced that “this is a dictionary of use” and that the collection has been based on the terms used in the documentation of the EGA Masters: catalog, product lists, checking-lists, etc. He stressed that in this dictionary Elhuyar's linguistic technologies have been fundamental to automate the work to the maximum, and said that throughout the process the experts of the EGA Master have had a direct intervention.
