The Elhuyar Foundation, together with Euskomedia and the research group IXA of the UPV, has developed the project Patrimonios dentro de la capitalidad cultural San Sebastián 2016. Heritage is a platform that offers the possibility to collect, show and interpret in an innovative way the Basque digital heritage and that can be seen in the following route: ondarebideak.dss2016.eu.
Today, it is undeniable that the Internet has opened new ways for us to know the environment, to travel, to relate... and to visit and know museums. heritage Bidea, a project that represents a step forward in the field of new technologies, has allowed to collect and know the Basque heritage in an interactive web.
We have numerous museums to which, visiting, we can know our heritage and our culture. In addition, we can make visits not only on site, but also through digital portals. However, unfortunately, the heritage is totally dispersed and in order to know it, it is necessary to go to each of these institutions.
The aim of the website Patrimonios is to bring together and show all this heritage in a single space, making it a virtual museum of Basque culture from the funds of Donostialdea. But in addition to the entities that own these funds, citizens will also be the protagonist. In addition to the collections and contents that can be disseminated by the first, the citizens also have the opportunity to incorporate new contents, make digital exhibitions and visit and comment on exhibitions organized by other citizens. Through exhibitions or digital itineraries all the contents of the platform are put in contact, regardless of who owns it, allowing a personal interpretation of this heritage.
In the project, Elhuyar and Euskomedia have done a great work of penetration, presenting the project in various institutions to bring together funds and show it coherently in one place. On the one hand, cataloguing systems have been unified and, on the other hand, taking into account that these funds are multilingual, it has tried to make them available to all visitors who access the platform, regardless of their language. Linguistic technologies have been of great importance. This project has implemented the results of research carried out for years by the Elhuyar Foundation and the IXA group, such as the search engine that allows search in several languages, the interconnection of similar documents, the technology to link texts with Wikipedia and the technology to listen to texts. All of them allow the visitor to comfortably browse the contents. Bideak heritage has been developed entirely in open source and is available on the network: https://github.com/Elhuyar/Heritage.
Currently, the project brings together the funds of 30 entities, with more than 400,000 elements (photos, videos, articles, scores, songs, letters...) distributed in different routes or exhibitions. The aim is to foster collaboration between institutions and, among all, to create a complete, powerful and rich cultural network.
At this moment, as shown, you can find, among others, the following itineraries: Today a tour of the authors and works of the group, which takes us through Basque mythology, on the Comète network that crossed the border through Bidasoaldea, about Basque film directors... and many others. These virtual itineraries offer us a good starting point to know better our heritage and our culture, and aim to arouse the interest to know firsthand what we know through the screen.
